Hail damage is a problem in Peoria and across Illinois. Softball-size hail is not unheard of and can shatter glass, puncture the roof of your house or business, and destroy the exterior of your car. In 2014, Illinois reported the second highest number of hail damage claims in the country. As you can see, Peoria is no stranger to hail damage, not to mention the types of storms that bring flood damage.

There are steps you can take to limit the damage that hail can cause to you and your property. Here are some hailstorm safety tips from the National Weather Service:

  • Move your car to a garage or other shelter. If you are driving in a hailstorm, pull into a gas station. The longer that you drive in a storm the more damage you are likely to do to your vehicle.
  • Stay away from windows. Hail can break through the glass, injuring you and anyone else nearby.
  • Go inside. If you get caught outside in a hailstorm, flee indoors as soon as possible. If you are stuck outside, protect your head. This is the part of your body most vulnerable to a serious injury. Just imagine what softball-size hail could do to you or a loved one.

Keep in mind that heavy winds frequently accompany hailstorms and bring gusts strong enough to knock down trees and utility poles. Be wary of these weather conditions; they may mean a tornado is on its way.
